Hosam K. Fathy's Control Optimization Laboratory (COOL) is interested in the application of model reduction theory and optimal control theory to energy systems, with particular emphasis on lithium-ion batteries, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration, and the smart grid. We use model reduction theory to simplify electrochemistry-based battery models to the point where they are suitable for system identification, model-based prognostics/diagnostics, and optimal estimation/control, with minimal loss of fidelity. We explore battery health-conscious optimal power management for both the on-road operation and V2G usage of PHEVs. Finally, we examine the use of battery health modeling and robust control theory in the context of energy storage and management for the smart grid.
